Is there any truth in that old proverb, “An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away?”

Recent studies show that eating fruits and veggies on a regular basis may very well keep you from getting the infections and diseases responsible for chronic health disorders and diseases.

We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for you but what about the apple? Is it as nutritious as everyone thinks it is?

Apples have a long-standing reputation as being healthy, filling, and nutritious food products.

They are consumed all over the world, even by people from countries that can’t grow apples. Tropical countries incapable of producing apples import them in because their native people demand that they have access to this medicinal, healthy fruit.

One benefit of eating apples is that they fight against cancer, especially lung cancer.

One study done on this subject, published by the Nutrition Journal in 2004, showed that apples really do decrease the risk of someone getting lung cancer by up to 50 percent.

These are significant findings and smokers should pay close attention to them. It was found that smokers who never eat apples, or who eat them infrequently, are not protected against lung cancer at all.

Apples also offer protection against heart disease. This includes disorders such as strokes, hypertension, and various other heart problems. The same study (mentioned above) showed that people who eat apples regularly are greatly protected against developing coronary problems.

Pulmonary patients should always include plenty of apples in their diets because they offer protection against asthma attacks. Research and other medical studies have proven that the more apples an asthmatic person eats, the less chance he or she has of having an asthma attack.

Eating apples regularly also guards against obesity.

Apples are filling, bulky, and full of fiber, making them excellent choices for weight-loss enthusiasts. People who eat a couple of apples daily will see significant gains in their weight loss efforts within a few weeks.

Apples have the awesome ability to normalize blood sugar levels, which is a definite advantage for diabetics. Quercetin, a substance found in apple peels, has been found to reduce blood sugar levels and decrease the chances of developing diabetes. Another finding of the study mentioned above was that eating berries also decreases the chances of developing diabetes.

The ability of Apples to fight cancer is due to their high antioxidant levels. Those same high levels also work to stop the growth of both colon and liver cancer.

Now, do you think that eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away?

There is very strong evidence that the old proverb was a wise piece of advice that all of us should follow.
